Corinne Thomsen
Hi! I’m Corinne, and I love the art and adventure of traveling, teaching, and exploring the world. I first got into ESL teaching mainly as a means of satisfying my Wanderlust. I loved exploring new places, having new experiences, learning new languages and gaining understanding of different cultures and people. I soon found that teaching ESL abroad wasn’t only a way of paying for my travel experience, it was my experience. I found that through teaching, I was gaining unique cultural insight, forming lasting friendships and getting the true experience of living and working in a foreign country. I was both a teacher and a student.
But, it wasn’t until I had a class of Japanese kindergarten students that I realized how much I really LOVED teaching ESL abroad. I found myself teaching animal vocabulary, running boorishly around the classroom, roaring like a lion, scratching my armpits like a monkey, and flailing my imaginary octopus arms in the air while screaming out “Lion! Monkey! Octopus!” And the students squealed with understanding and delight. Somehow, I knew then that I loved the energy and enthusiasm of inquisitive students learning a new language and, also, that it was kind of fun to act like an octopus sometimes. I can’t wait until the next time I go abroad to teach and learn! I’ll see you overseas!
