Working abroad as an ESL instructor has many perks. Some of those of those perks is meeting new people and learning about different cultures. One of the things that I have learned from working abroad in the North East African region is that you're never alone. People connect with you and constantly ask about how you're doing or if you need anything. One of the most memorable experiences I have was when I missed teaching one day due to an illness. That evening I was visited by my entire class. They even brought me a box of baked goods from my favorite bakery. Although I was away from home, I never felt alone. The entire city of Assuit was kind and giving to me.
Another incident I will never forget was when I was visited by a student one day, a few weeks after he completed the Business English course. He came to inform me that he had been hired in a bank. He also wanted to thank me for recommending him for the job. He told me that his mom has not stopped praying for me since he got the position.
I managed to help and be helped by the people that I encountered through teaching ESL abroad. Go, seek, venture, give and come back and tell us all about it.
