Country Profiles
Eastern Europe
- After decades of Soviet domination many Eastern European countries have becomecenters of industry and economic growth as they "catch up" with more establishedEuropean democracies. English is the "LinguaFranca" of international business and so the demand for teaching in this sector is high.
- This region has long since been a mainstay of ESL teaching activity. The European Union is an economic superpower in its own right, with each member nation, for the most part, having a good track record of a stable, strong economy.
Asia-Pacific
- A booming region for ESL particularly over the last 10 years. As these economies have grown, so has the international trade and perceived need to have a strong command of English. Some countries in this region, particularly South Korea and Taiwan, is a hotbed for teaching English to Young Learners. China, is, by far one of the biggest ESL markets in the region while Japan still offers very attractive teaching positions although the competition to fill them is high.
- India has been predicted to be one of the three major economic powers in the next decade and although one of the official languages is English, there is still a huge demand for specialized ESL training particularly in the technology sector.
The Americas
- South and Central America are particularly "hot" right now, with numerous countries in the region demanding, trained, mother tongue English speakers to go there and fill positions in private and government language schools. North America is, in fact, a huge ESL market bustling with language schools filled with foreign language students wanting to study English and, in many cases, go on to study at a tertiary education level in either the US or Canada.
Middle East
- This oil rich region has increasing become more "westernized" and, for the locals, dealings with nationals from English speaking countries has become an ever increasing necessity. Demand for ESL teachers is high, but then so is the competition to fill these positions as salaries are significantly higher in the Middle East and, believe it or not, income tax is non-existent!
Africa
- Both ends of this vast continent seem to be the only places to offer incomes and working benefits comparable to other regions in the world, while the majority of countries here rely on volunteer teachers to meet their needs. Contact us to learn more about volunteer teaching work.
