Before you leave, you probably have a lot of questions on your mind regarding what to take and what to consider. Here is a checklist of frequently asked questions asked by our graduates just before they depart for overseas:

When should I go?: This depends on which country you want to teach in. Some countries hire teachers on a seasonal basis while others recruit all year round. Our country profiles provide general information about the best time to apply for jobs. There a pros and cons to applying for jobs from home versus from in your destination country itself all of which your job placement advisor will explain to you.

What should I take with me?

First of all check that your passport will be valid for the period of time that you will be overseas. Take clothes appropriate for the climate you will be living in. Some schools require semi-formal dress so be sure to pack clothes that will suit. Buying clothes can be expensive overseas so its a good idea to purchase a good amount before you leave and take them with you. Its also a good idea to take some teaching materials with you. Your TESOL/TEFL course coach will provide a list of recommended teaching gems that you will be glad to have once overseas.

What about health insurance?: Its always a good idea to go overseas with adequate health insurance. There a many different plans so it can become confusing when it comes to choosing the right one. However, as a rule of thumb, we recommend getting a plan that is offered by an international provider as premiums tend to be cheaper than plans offered by U.S. based providers.

What about tax?: As a U.S. citizen your worldwide income is generally subject to U.S. income tax. However, most of our graduates qualify for an exclusion from tax of up to $70,000 in income earned while working abroad.
